It’s been nearly a full year with many ups and downs. Multiple variants of covid, new and ever changing restrictions to our daily lives. But in all that time, a lot of us have been keeping fit, eating healthy, enjoying the ability to get more work done from the comfort of our own homes. In a way this has helped a lot of people see their lives in a different way. Many people have realised that they don’t really want to be working until the age of 65 or 70. They would rather retire early and enjoy their lives exploring the world and connecting with their families and friends. Though covid has been so destructive, it has given many of us a chance to stop and reflect on our lives and our goals for the future.
On that same beat, I think it’s important for all of us gym rats to take a break from our training, whether it's just for a couple extra days or a couple of weeks, to allow our bodies to recover and rebuild. To reset and refresh. So that we too can also reflect on our fitness goals for the year to come. This can be just as important for your health as exercising, especially if you have been hard at it, sticking to your routine for the whole year. As Christmas approaches, spend that extra time with your family and friends, rebuild those connections, enjoy the festive season and all the great things that come with it. Eggnog, Christmas puddings, mulled wine, gingerbread cookies. Whatever it is that you enjoy about this time of year, take the time to enjoy it. You’ve worked hard all year and now you deserve to have a little bit more fun.
As you give your body the chance to recover and reset, it’s also time to set new goals. The new year is a great time to begin anew, to start those new goals with vigour and a renewed sense of determination. Reflect on your accomplishments and failures this year, think deeply and clearly about what worked and what didn’t. And from those insights, you can look ahead and set new targets for the year to come with a new and improved system and routine. It’s important to think about whether your goals this year were the right goals. Did you over-reach? Could you have done more? What would you have done differently? Now is the time to get clear on who you want to become from here on. The person you see yourself becoming is the person you will become.
So over the next couple of days, or the next couple of weeks, read more, watch more, listen more on the topics that interest you most. Educate yourself more on the topics you want to understand. Build up your knowledge base so that you can make better informed decisions next year. And when people ask you what your new years resolution will be, you won’t be making something up on the spot like you usually do. You’ll have a sense of pride in answering with conviction, that you have a goal for the new year. That you have thought deeply about it and no matter how they respond or what they say, you know you can do it.
Happy holidays everyone.
